Celebrate National Wise Health Consumer Month with a Heart Healthy Recipe
The American Institute for Preventive Medicine created National Wise Health Consumer Month in February. During the month, you're encouraged to pay attention to your health care options, such as your medical provider and health insurance, and to focus on healthy living. One way to become a wise health consumer is to pay attention to what you eat. Try this heart healthy recipe on top of chopped lettuce or salad greens, or as a dip for raw vegetables. Avocado Dressing Ingredients: 1/2 cup low fat or fat-free Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon chopped red onion 1 teaspoon hot sauce (or to taste) 1 ripe avocado, peeled and cut into cubes Place the yogurt, onion, hot sauce and avocado in a large mixing bowl. Use a fork or a potato masher to mix the ingredients together, mashing the avocado as you work. Add a spoonful of the dressing to your favorite salad, then toss to evenly coat the lettuce or greens with it. If you are going to use the dressing as a dip, scoop it into a small serving bowl. Serve with celery sticks, carrot sticks and cucumber slices. The dressing is heart healthy because of the monounsaturated fats found in avocado. According to the American Heart Association, monounsaturated fats help lower the levels of bad cholesterol in your blood and help protect your heart. Another way to celebrate National Wise Health Consumer Month is learn as much as you can about your health insurance policy.
